Revisiting the Daily MTG Booster Draft Simulator

I know, it’s Return to Ravnica which is on every Magic player’s mind right now – the second part of my limited preview for that set (in German) just went up on PlanetMTG – but I found myself busy listening to an audio tape for hours in front of my computer screen, requiring my full attention only every few minutes, and after durdling around a while on LeBestiare with the new set and realizing that there is something wrong with their card collation, I spontaneously decided to make a mock Magic 2013 draft on Daily MTG (I would link the draft simulator dircetly, but for some reason, this doesn’t work).

This is what came out of it:

Kraken Hatchling
Master of the Pearl Trident
Silvercoat Lion
War Priest of Thune
Aven Squire
Welkin Tern
Welkin Tern
Scroll Thief
Scroll Thief
Wind Drake
Watercourser
Captain’s Call
Captain’s Call
Talrand’s Invocation
Pillarfield Ox
Clone
Archaeomancer
Healer of the Pride
Unsummon
Pacifism
Pacifism
Essence Scatter
Ring of Evos Isle
9 Island
8 Plains

Sideboard (best of):
Hydrosurge
Negate
Encrust
Encrust
Tricks of the Trade
Tricks of the Trade
Rewind

I feel that is a very reasonable deck, although I would prefer the Hatchling and the Ox to be a Show of Valor and a Guardians of Akrasa, and the Healer to be a Griffin Protector. A Glorious Charge in the sideboard would be nice, too.

Does anyone else do those mock drafts anymore?

I used to do it sometimes. After reading this I started my own attempt which gave me the following forty cards:

    Duty-Bound Dead
    Duty-Bound Dead
    Ravenous Rats
    Ravenous Rats
    Augur of Bolas
    Augur of Bolas
    Fog Bank
    Welkin Tern
    Giant Scorpion
    Wind Drake
    Wind Drake
    Harbor Bandit
    Archaeomancer

    Unsummon
    Unsummon
    Searing Spear
    Searing Spear
    Murder
    Murder
    Rewind
    Sleep
    Essence Drain

    Gem of Becoming
    7 Island
    8 Swamp
    2 Mountain

Well, it’s lacking a real wincon and the splash is probably too greedy, but I just didn’t saw any good larger creature…

The only thing I don’t understand is that your list has no Odric in it which is opened in the third pack…

    Sideboard:
    Jace’s Phantasm
    Mind Sculpt
    Mind Sculpt
    Elixir of Immortality
    Crippling Blight
    Duskmantle Prowler
    Watercourser
    Tricks of the Trade
    Kraken Hatchling
    Bloodthrone Vampire
    Disentomb
    Disentomb
    Downpour
    Vastwood Gorger
    Plummet
    Serpent’s Gift
    Smelt
    Smelt

  2. My draft for this week (a few hatepicks in the end, when I knew my deck was full):

    Round 1:
    Murder
    Servant of Nefarox
    Cower in Fear
    Crippling Blight
    Giant Scorpion
    Krenko’s Command
    Timberpack Wolf
    Rancor
    Ring of Valkas
    Revive
    Duty-Bound Dead
    Plummet
    Arbor Elf
    Hydrosurge
    Island

    Round 2:
    Duskmantle Prowler
    Murder
    Flinthoof Boar
    Bloodhunter Bat
    Titanic Growth
    Rancor
    Yeva’s Forcemage
    Naturalize
    Plummet
    Walking Corpse
    Crippling Blight
    Disentomb
    Kindled Fury
    Duty-Bound Dead
    Mountain

    Round 3:
    Essence Drain
    Timberpack Wolf
    Duskmantle Prowler
    Timberpack Wolf
    Bladetusk Boar
    Tormented Soul
    Yeva’s Forcemage
    Mark of the Vampire
    Arbor Elf
    Aven Squire
    Disentomb
    Naturalize
    Plummet
    Serpent’s Gift
    Island

KI drafters are really strange – neither Rancor 8th pick, nor Arbor Elf 13th and Duty-Bound Dead 14th should have been possibilities.

I don’t have time to build it right now, but it should be fast BG aggro with a lot of removal and 2 Rancor, quite a lot better than an average deck in a real draft.
